Green Thumbs Up: Rossborough gets stuck in with Jersey Trees for Life

On 16 August, the Rossborough Jersey team enjoyed a fantastic day of sunshine whilst volunteering with Jersey Trees for Life at Le Cotil de Vibert. The day marked the first summer of our three-year sponsorship of the Jersey Trees for Life Mont Vibert Wilding Project.

A great day for the project, seven of our team members from across all departments came together to help move the project closer to achieving its goals of preserving indigenous tree species and monitoring the flora and fauna to encourage a healthy woodland focusing on local species.

The team got stuck in with landscaping and terracing, removing invasive sycamore saplings, choosing the best places for new bird and bat boxes and recording the number of different mushrooms and wildflowers present in the area.

‘It was a great day but definitely hard work!’ said Lee Parker ‘It means a lot to all of us at Rossborough to be part of this project. Everyone wants to get stuck in and do their part - it's a surprisingly big site but it's already amazing to see how much progress we have made.’

The groundwork done this week by the Rossborough team has cleared the way for the next stage of the project which includes tree planting and putting up more bat boxes later in the year. Very excitingly, a consulting environmentalist from the UK will also be visiting the site to advise on the best layout and ideal planting positions in the future.

Rossborough is an active supporter of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Business Development Executive, Stephen Rafferty explained. ‘This project specifically supports Goal 15 - Life on Land - by helping return a forgotten space back to a naturally biodiverse area designed to be attractive to bees and other local wildlife. Once the initial works are completed, an inspection can be undertaken and an ongoing management plan formulated to ensure we make a responsible and measured impact on this beautiful woodland.’
