Rossborough is proud to be a silver sponsor for team DragonFish in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge that is coming up later this year. This challenge is the premier event in the ocean rowing world, so much so, it has been dubbed ‘the world’s toughest row.’

The annual race will begin in early December, where 35 teams from around the world compete in a 3,000-mile race from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua. It’s not a race for the faint-hearted!

More people have been in space than have rowed an ocean, which is unsurprising when they say that waves can measure up to 30 feet high when crossing the ocean. Team DragonFish will tackle the challenge by rowing for two hours, then sleeping for two hours, all day every day. And if that isn’t intense enough, the fastest pairs crossing record for this challenge is just over 32 days.

There are two contestants who make up team DragonFish, Peter Wright and Steve Hayes, two Jersey-based endurance race athletes. Pete is the Financial Director of Prosperity 24/7, a business and IT consultancy company, and Steve is General Manager of the Somerville Hotel in Jersey.

Their fundraising target is a mighty £50,000 which will be donated to their two chosen charities. Firstly, Durrell, a project that aims to restore 4,500 hectares of vital forest corridors by 2030 and secondly, Macmillan Jersey, a charity that offers support to people in Jersey with any type of cancer at any stage.

Peter Wright says “Steve and I are very grateful for Rossborough Insurance’s sponsorship support as it takes a lot of funding to even get us to the start line of this challenge. We will need to fund the boat, the technical equipment, on-shore support, food, shipping, as well as many other operational costs that are involved.”

Rossborough’s Group Business Development Director, Lee Refault commented: “We are delighted to be supporting two Jersey-based athletes in this challenge that seems almost impossible to you and me. This ocean rowing challenge requires resilience to physical and mental extremes. All of us at Rossborough are willing Pete and Steve to be first over that finish line but completing this challenge will be an incredible achievement in itself.”
