Coast to Coast: Tim Mitchell completes 190-mile challenge

Blog Tim Challenge C2C June 2026

Thursday 02 Jul 2026

Tim Mitchell, Managing Director of Gallagher’s Isle of Man office, has completed the Coast to Coast Challenge, a 190-mile trek from St Bees on the west coast of England to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast.

Taking place over 10 days, the route saw Tim walk across some of the UK’s most varied and demanding landscapes, including the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines and the North York Moors. Carrying his own kit and camping along the way, Tim took on the challenge to raise funds for two charities close to his heart: Dementia Jersey and Ed Space.

For Tim, the challenge was about more than distance. It was a personal test of resilience, mindset and endurance.

“I thought I understood what I was letting myself in for,” said Tim. “To meet the challenge of completing the challenge in 10 days, I knew I needed to walk up to 8 hours a day and cover a distance of 20 miles. I knew I was going to be walking all terrains, including mountains. But
I didn’t fully appreciate what it was all about until I had done it.”

A personal challenge

Tim completed the challenge alone, following the national trail across the country and relying on careful planning, signposting and a route app to stay on track.

Walking has become an important part of Tim’s life, particularly as he spends much of the year working in the Isle of Man while his family is based in Jersey.

“Walking has been my way of dealing with being absent from the family,” he said. “The 10 days of walking on your own gave me plenty of time to reflect and get rid of the clutter that’s in my mind.”

The challenge was also a way for Tim to prove to himself that, at 58, he still had the physical and mental strength to take on something significant.

“It was a way of proving to myself that I could still do it. I had the resilience, the fortitude, the mental strength and the physical strength.”

Ten days of endurance

Tim’s days started early, often between 6 am and 7 am, with around eight hours of walking ahead. His routine was to cover roughly 10 miles before taking a break, then continue for another 10 miles, aiming to finish by late afternoon so he could rest, recover and start again the following morning.

The weather added another layer to the challenge. Across the route, Tim experienced almost every condition apart from snow, from sunshine and cloud to heavy rain, hail and strong winds.

Some days brought steep climbs and exposed high ground. Others involved wet fields, waist-high wheat, clay paths and mud that made every step harder.

“You can’t really turn back,” said Tim. “You just have to keep on going and brave it through.”

To prepare, Tim made the most of the Isle of Man’s varied landscape, which helped replicate some of the terrain he would face on the route. In the weeks leading up to the challenge, he walked 20 miles a day at weekends while carrying his full kit.

“That paid dividends because I was able to cope,” he said.

Time to reconnect

One of the most powerful parts of the experience for Tim was the opportunity to slow down and reconnect with nature. He chose not to wear headphones, instead taking in the landscapes, sounds and surroundings as he crossed the country. Managing his phone battery also meant stepping away from social media and the wider noise of daily life.

“You divorce yourself from social media, you divorce yourself from the big wide world,” he said. “A lot of the luxuries we have in the modern world just went out of the window.”

The scenery left a lasting impression. From mountains and lakes to moorland and open countryside, Tim said walking the route gave him a new appreciation for the UK’s amazing landscapes.

“You would never see it driving through the country. You had to walk it to really appreciate just how beautiful the UK is and what nature is all about.”

Supporting two important charities

Tim took on the challenge in support of Dementia Jersey and Ed Space.
Dementia Jersey is a cause close to Tim personally, as his mother has dementia. Ed Space is the Isle of Man office’s selected charity, and its work also connects closely with the mental health aspect of Tim’s challenge.

“I wanted to do one charity from Jersey, because I’m from Jersey and my family are in Jersey, but because I’m based in the Isle of Man, I wanted to do something for the Isle of Man as well,” he explained.

Although the challenge began as a personal journey, Tim hopes it can also help raise valuable funds and awareness for both charities.

“I was doing it for myself, but if we can boost these donations, then there are two amazing charities that would really benefit from it.”

A lasting sense of achievement

Looking back, Tim said he is proud of setting himself a target, preparing properly and completing it.

“If you set yourself something to do, if you set yourself a target and you prepare for it, you can do it. It’s amazing how resilient the body is, and you’re much stronger than you often think you are.”

The challenge has also left Tim with a renewed perspective, “My wife said I came back a different person. I took on a different perspective in life. The challenge now is maintaining that.”

And would he take on another long-distance trail?
“Absolutely,” said Tim. “I’m already planning and thinking about the next one.”
