Nathan Hines joins the build-up to the Siam Cup with Gallagher

We’re thrilled to announce that former Scotland international and Gallagher ambassador Nathan Hines will be returning to Jersey on Saturday, 3rd May, to enjoy the Siam Cup, proudly sponsored by Gallagher.

Nathan brings a wealth of experience from his illustrious rugby career. Born in Wagga Wagga, Australia, he began his rugby journey playing league before transitioning to union at 19. His move to Scotland marked the start of a remarkable international career, earning 77 caps for Scotland between 2000 and 2011. Nathan's club career is equally impressive, having played for teams like Edinburgh Rugby, USA Perpignan, Leinster, ASM Clermont Auvergne, and Sale Sharks. Notably, he was part of the British & Irish Lions squad during their 2009 tour of South Africa.

After retiring from professional play, Nathan transitioned into coaching, including a stint with the Scottish national team and later with Montpellier Hérault Rugby in France. Today, he serves as a Development Director at Gallagher, where he leverages his rugby insights to support various initiatives, including community engagement and leadership programmes.

We caught up with Nathan to get his thoughts on the game that shaped his life—from his journey into rugby to the lessons it’s taught him, and what makes the Siam Cup so special. Here’s what he had to say…

How did you get into rugby in the first place?

I played rugby league in Australia until I was 19 years old. After I was told I was no longer needed at the NRL club I played for, the president suggested I try rugby.

What do you love most / value most about the game?

The people you meet. Teammates and fans of the game. The lessons it teaches you about teamwork, commitment, honesty and hard work.

Who has inspired or motivated you the most in your career and why?

"My motivation was always to be the best player I could be, to contribute meaningfully to the team. There wasn’t one defining moment of inspiration, but I was constantly reminded that, at the end of the day, we were playing a sport. Knowing that so many people face far greater challenges in life kept me grounded and inspired me to make the most of every opportunity.

What’s the best bit of advice ever given to you?

Have your bags packed. Meaning, be ready for any opportunity that comes your way by working hard.

Which of your achievements are you most proud?

More a decision than an achievement. Having the courage to move away from Australia at age 21 to play rugby in Galashiels, Scotland.

What would you say to anyone who would like to try a new sport (or undertake a challenge), but don’t have the confidence to go for it?

I’d start by asking what’s holding them back—understanding the root of that apprehension is key. Once you identify the source of your self-doubt, you can start taking practical steps to overcome it. If it’s something within your control, even small changes can build confidence and move you closer to giving it a go.

Have you ever been to a Siam Cup? What are you most looking forward to about the event / run up to the event?

Yes. The thing I love about the Siam Cup is the rivalry between the islands. I also love how the communities support the event.

What is it like/what’s the best thing about being a Gallagher ambassador?

Although I am a fully-fledged employee of Gallagher, I do have an ambassadorial role as I am invited to events as both an employee and a former player. It is easy to tell everyone that asks if I am enjoying life after rugby as I love working for Gallagher and am lucky to have found the role.
